Chapter thirty-seven

It was six p.m. on a Friday night when there was a knock on the door and Dunja went to see who was there. Pierre was standing on the doorstep holding a large bouquet of yellow roses.

‘Will you forgive me?’ he said as he held them towards her.

That evening they went to one of his favourite restaurants where only locals dined. La Petite Ferme was a small traditional bistro in a back street of the fifteenth arrondissement. It had rough, red-brick walls, red and white checked tablecloths and photos of animals — mostly farm ones, adorning the walls.

Pierre apologised again just before they arrived at the bistro. ‘I’m so relieved you’ve forgiven me. I don’t know what came over me. I get so carried away wanting to look after you; I guess I forget how much your independence means to you. I know you’ve told me it’s one of the reasons you left Yugoslavia.’ Pierre’s tone was touching. Instead of answering him, Dunja stopped in the middle of the street, hugged him and kissed him on the lips.

By the time they arrived at the restaurant hand in hand, their misunderstanding had been swept away.
